Playmakers launches ‘Readers Theatre’
First event took place at Madisonville’s historic Bayou Cottage
This January, Playmakers, Inc. Community Theater in Covington introduces an exciting addition to the Northshore theatre scene: Playmakers’ Readers Theatre. With a mission to bring live theatre to the community in places it may not have reached before, Readers Theatre will perform one act plays, staged readings and other theatrical endeavors throughout the community in a variety of venues.
The Readers Theatre will publish its official season in February, but launched its inaugural reading on January 21, 2018 with a staged reading of Ladies in Waiting: The Judgement of Henry VIII by James Cougar Canfield.
The event took place at the 1854 Bayou Cottage on the grounds of the Trinity Marine Shipyard, 150 Hwy. 21, in Madisonville, Louisiana.
Ladies in Waiting: The Judgement of Henry VIII, under the direction of Larry Gray, featured Rex Badeaux as the king, and his six wives were Gina Pauratore as Catherine of Aragon; Julie Generis as Anne Boleyn, Jane McNulty as Jane Seymour, Melany Linder Graham as Anne of Cleves, Kathyrn Merris Scott as Catherine Howard and Anne Pourciau as Katherine Parr.
Written by James Cougar Canfield (TETA Playfest Award Winner, Alley Theatre’s Houston Young Playwright Award Winner) and workshopped and performed by graduates of East 15 Acting School’s MFA Acting International program, Ladies in Waiting finds King Henry VIII in a purgatory-like situation, where one by one he must confront and face off with each of his wives. Through dark humor, devastating truths, sexy seductions, and powerful revelations, Henry comes face to face with what his legacy has become: one entirely defined by women.
The February performance at the Southern Hotel had to be cancelled as the artist had a personal conflict.
