September 1-17, 2017
Playmakers, Inc. Theater kicks off its 62nd season of shows on September 1 with the clever comedy, The Underpants, a classic 1910 farce by Carl Sternheim, adapted by Steve Martin. The renowned comic actor and author of Picasso at the Lapine Agile provides a wild satire adapted from a classic German play.
Performances are weekends from September 1 to 17, 2017, 8pm Fridays and Saturdays and 2pm Sundays (no show September 3). The Underpants stars Anysia Manthos Genre, Allen Bryant, Jennifer Patterson, Robert Fielding, Steve Swanger and Charlie Vaught.
While Steve Martin brings his comic genius to The Underpants, director Ladson Poole brings his own comic sensibilities to Martin’s sophisticated literary style. In the story, Theobald Maske has an unusual problem…his wife’s underpants won’t stay on. One Sunday morning they fall to her ankles right in the middle of town – a public scandal! Mortified, Theo swears to keep her at home until she can find some less unruly undies. Amid this chaos he’s trying to rent a room in their flat. The prospective lodgers have some underlying surprises of their own. Louise’s momentary display does not result in the feared scandal but it does attract two infatuated men— a foppish poet and a whiny hypochondriac.
